Once you have settled on a layout, the finish is the decision that determines how the closet actually feels to use. It is also the one most people spend the least time on — usually because they are choosing from a screen or a tiny chip rather than a real panel in real light.
Most custom closets we build land in one of two finish families: woodgrain or ultra matte solid color. Here is how they genuinely differ.
Woodgrain Finishes
These reproduce the grain, tone, and often the tactile texture of real timber on an engineered panel. The good ones are convincing enough that people ask whether it is solid wood.
They suit you if: your home already has visible wood — floors, beams, existing millwork — and you want the closet to belong rather than stand out. They also work well in rooms with limited natural light, where a solid color can flatten out.
Practical advantages: grain is remarkably good at disguising dust, minor scuffs, and fingerprints. In a child’s closet or a hard-working reach-in, a mid-tone woodgrain will look presentable far longer than a dark solid.
The trade-off: grain has a direction, so panels need to be laid out thoughtfully or the closet reads as slightly off. That is a fabrication concern rather than something you manage, but it is a reason to ask how a company handles grain matching.
Our current woodgrain range runs from Cambridge and Nantucket — soft, woven-looking textures at the pale end — through mid-tones like Drift Oak, Stone Oak, and Sierra Oak, into deeper tones like Whiskey Cove and Shadow Oak, finishing at near-black Golden Ember. You can see all of them here.
Ultra Matte Finishes
Solid colors with a very low sheen. No grain, no gloss — the surface reads almost like chalk, and light falls across it softly rather than bouncing off.
They suit you if: your interior is contemporary, or you want the closet to disappear into the wall colour rather than announce itself. A pale ultra matte in a small reach-in makes the space feel appreciably larger than a dark woodgrain will.
Practical advantages: the low-sheen surface is genuinely more fingerprint-resistant than gloss, which matters a great deal on drawer fronts and door edges. It also photographs well, if you care about that.
The trade-off: a solid colour has nowhere to hide a scratch. On a very dark ultra matte — our Midnight, for instance — a deep scuff will show in a way it simply would not on grain. Not a reason to avoid it, but worth knowing before you put it in a mudroom closet.
Our ultra matte range spans Moonstone Glow and Ivory at the light end, through Cotton Candy, Sagewood, and Clay, down to Slate and Midnight.
Choosing Between Them
Look at the room, not the closet. The finish should relate to what is already there — flooring, trim, the bed frame. A closet chosen in isolation tends to look like an afterthought.
Consider the light. North-facing rooms in Marin and San Francisco get cool, flat light for much of the day. Cool-toned finishes can go slightly grey in that light. Warmer woodgrains hold their character better.
Be honest about use. A primary walk-in that only adults enter can take a dark solid colour beautifully. A closet shared with children, or one that stores sports gear and vacuum cleaners, will look better for longer in a mid-tone grain.
Do not decide from a screen. This is the one we would underline. Monitors shift colour, and a 2-inch chip tells you very little about how a finish behaves across a six-foot panel. Get a real sample into the actual room and look at it morning and evening.
Mixing the Two
You are not obliged to pick one. A common and very effective approach is woodgrain on the open shelving and hanging sections, with ultra matte on drawer fronts and doors. You get the warmth of grain where you see the most surface area, and the clean, wipeable finish where hands actually land.
Another approach that works well in walk-ins: a pale ultra matte throughout to keep the space feeling open, with a single darker woodgrain wall behind the hanging as a backdrop. It gives the closet depth without closing it in.
Does Finish Affect Price?
Less than most people expect. Within our range, the difference between a woodgrain and an ultra matte on the same closet is modest — layout, drawer count, and total linear footage drive cost far more than colour choice. So choose the finish you actually want rather than the one you think is cheaper.
Seeing Them Properly
We bring physical samples to every consultation. Hold a panel against your wall, put it next to your flooring, look at it with the curtains open and again with the lights on. It takes ten minutes and it is the difference between a finish you tolerate and one you are glad about every morning.
